News of a £470,000 grant for Lurgan Town, revealed in the Lurgan Mail last week, was officially announced by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland this week.
The funding, provided by the Northern Ireland Executive through the
Department for Social Development, will allow the club to expand its services to accommodate growing local demand. The work will include the construction of a half sized 3G pitch and a new larger clubhouse.
In additional the outdoor environment will be upgraded; this will include the replacement of floodlighting to allow the pitches to be used in the evening from September to April
Minister McCausland said: “In the last quarter of a century, Lurgan Town Football club has gone from strength to strength, providing sporting activities for the residents of the Lurgan Neighbourhood
Renewal Area. However its success has created a situation where it has
outgrown its facilities.
“This is an exciting time for the Club, in its silver jubilee year, and I am pleased, therefore, that the Executive through my Department is able to provide the necessary funding to assist its continued growth into the future.”
Welcoming the funding announcement Nigel Johnston, Chairman of Lurgan
Town FC said: “We are delighted that the Department has provided this much needed funding for the club.
“The construction of a new half sized 3G pitch will be ideal for running sessions for local children making exercise an enjoyable pastime and keeping them active.”
