Hamilton hits out
GARY Hamilton was scathing in his criticism of his side’s defending after Saturday’s defeat to Ballinamallard.
The Blues have conceded 14 goals in their last six league games, having been beaten in all six, and the boss is blaming individual errors for that less than impressive record.
Hamilton was fuming at the manner of the three goals they conceded on Saturday afternoon and said players were given ‘home truths’ in the dressing room after the game.
Glenavon have also scored just four goals in those last six matches but Hamilton said he was unconcerned at his side’s attacking form.
“Offensively, I think we’re playing well but defensively, when we’re not in possession of the ball, it’s not good enough,” he said.
“We gifted them three goals. We didn’t want to concede an early goal because we did that last time. Then we go out and concede within a minute. It’s not good enough.
“It’s not going to be accepted any more and there was a few home truths told in the dressing room after the game. That will stay between us but we’re not going to accept defending like that and gifting goals to other teams. We’ve been doing it for a few weeks but that was the final straw.
“The first goal on Saturday was diabolical defending and the second and third goals were the same. You can’t do that. Ballinamallard’s confidence is up at the minute and that’s just giving them more. After we conceded the early goal, we were in the game again and doing really well. Then bang 2-0. We started brightly in the second half and looked like we were going to nick one then we’re 3-0 down.
“If you’re conceding two or three goals per game like we’ve been doing recently, you’re not going to win games. It’s too hard to score that many goals. Scoring goals is the hardest part of football and teams can’t score four goals every game.
“We did play good football at times. I’ve nothing against the boys going forward. They’re doing well, keeping the ball and getting into good positions. It’s not that part of the game I’m worried about, it’s the other part.
“We can’t put our finger on it. Players are making individual mistakes every game and it’s only the players who are doing it that can sort that out.
“From the sidelines, you can’t do anything about those mistakes. They need to have a look at themselves, take note of the mistakes they’re making and don’t do it again the next week. Everybody in life has to learn from mistakes. These boys have to start doing that very soon.
“The teams that concede the least goals win the most games. That’s something that we’ve been lacking over the last six or seven games. The individual errors that we’re making are costing us at the minute.
“Ballinamallard are a very good team though and it’s great to see them doing well for the local community and the fans. Having a Premiership team has been missed up there.”
