Stop the slide says boss
GLENAVON boss Gary Hamilton says it is crucial his side don’t lose to Dungannon Swifts again this weekend.
The Blues were beaten at Stangmore Park just two weeks ago and now host the Swifts currently sitting one point behind them in the Premiership table having played one game more.
Glenavon’s slide down the table has come after a run of six successive league defeats and Hamilton knows that it must come to an end sooner rather than later if they are to stop their slide.
The boss’s main concern this weekend, therefore, is avoiding another defeat against Darren Murphy’s men after the recent 2-1 defeat at Stangmore Park.
He said: “After the last match, we were disappointed not to get something from the game. We have to start picking up points from these games so hopefully we put in a good performances on Saturday, take our chances when they come and not make the same mistakes that we have made in the last few games.
“We have to start cutting out those individual errors. That’s the main thing. If we start doing that, we’ll win games, there’s no doubt about that. Over the last few weeks we’ve been doing very well going forward but we’ve been making far too many mistakes at the back.
“It’s important to get a win in every game but these ones are slightly more important because it’s against a team who are close to us in the table. It’s important to get at least a point out of these games.
“Obviously you want to win them and it would be great to get three points but we’ve lost at Donegal Celtic and at Dungannon recently. That gives them points to catch up on us and we don’t want that happening. If we don’t win the game, at the very least don’t lose it.”
Hamilton, however, is less concerned with finishing above Dungannon than surpassing their 34 points tally from last season.
He said: “We’ve always said we want to build on last year and get more points. We want to finish above Dungannon and that would be great but it’s more important that we improve on last season.”
Hamilton also said he expects to make ‘a few changes’ to the team that lost at Ballinamallard last time out.
Meanwhile, the club’s postponed game against Glentoran at the Oval has been rearranged for Tuesday February 26, kicking off at 7.45pm.
