Glenavon manager Gary Hamilton has confirmed he wants to bring the in-form forward back to Mourneview Park this summer but is prepared to wait until January to complete a deal.

Mitchell left Glenavon as a teenager in search of senior football and his development across recent seasons has attracted interest in the powerful striker from a number of Irish League clubs.

Hamilton is determined to finalise discussions with Dungannon and secure Mitchell’s signature.

“We have other targets but Andrew is the player we want to bring to Glenavon, ideally this summer,” said Hamilton. “We have put in a bid which we feel represents good value to Dungannon for a player entering the final year of his contract, although it has been rejected.

“That is how it stands and there is the option of going back in January to seal a pre-contract agreement with Andrew for next summer.

“However, the main choice would be to have Andrew in this summer.

“We tried to do things the right way when Andrew left us to join Dungannon, in terms of waiving a compensation fee that was our right at the risk of scaring off other clubs and maybe preventing Andrew from getting his desired move.

“We felt that was a gesture of good faith at the time and we stay hopeful of wrapping up a deal for Andrew.”

Hamilton could add another attacker to the Glenavon books but remains in discussions over a fresh deal for Daniel Kearns.
