In one of the few matches to be played last weekend Oxford Sunnyside FC travelled to St Mary’s for an Intermediate B league game and came back with all three points.
Oxford started slowly and allowed St. Mary’s to dominate possession in the first half. St. Mary’s took the lead after 15 minutes, a simple ball played from midfield into the forward on the edge of the box where the St Mary’s striker was allowed to turn and finish.
Oxford battled hard to find a way back into the game, a mistake from the St. Mary’s centre half after 35 minutes allowed Mickey Murtagh to break one on one with the goalkeeper and Mickey scored with his usual aplomb.
In the second half Oxford got much closer to their opponents in the middle of the field and fashioned half chances first by Pete Mills whose first time shot was cleared off the line and then Jack Wilson who pulled his effort wide.
The match was heading for a draw when John McGuigan released Jack Wilson down the left wing, Jack pushed the ball past the defender who slid in and brought him down to concede a penalty. Mickey Murtagh stepped up to secure all three points with his 20th goal of the season.
