Martin wins on a day of some fantastic scoring on fairways

Saturday saw competition for Club Professional Peter Hanna's prize and a lot of players who have been in great form for a while put their best foot forward to battle it out at the top.

Martin Scullion began the season playing off 12 but after 43 points off 11, he now finds himself playing off 7. Having finished runner up in the midweek competition he moved to the top of the leader board thanks to 21 homeward points helped by birdies at 10 and 18.

The runner-up was Steven Mulvenna who has been a man in form since he struck his first ball of the season. He too had 43 points, off 8, with birdies at 1, 3, 5 and 10, with his 20 points on the back 9 being just one less than the winner.

Having had a string of good scores which narrowly failed to find their way into the prizes, Steven will be hoping this is the breakthrough he has been waiting for.

Two players returned 42 points which were the result of spectacular rounds of golf. Jason McCann, 4, was 4 over par after 4 holes but then covered the last 14 holes in 6 under par thanks to birdies at 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18. This fantastic closing stretch meant he claimed third place over Peter Cummins.

Peter had the round of the year so far when he toured the course in 65 shots, off 1, and although he could not find a place on the podium he easily claimed the day’s gross prize. He had a bogey at 3, but had birdies at 1, 4, 6, 12, 15 and 16.

Three players returned 41 points with Derek Johnston taking 4th nett, off 23, with 21 points on the back 9 despite an NR at 13.

The low section was also settled on the back 9 with Ciaran Seeley, 4, and Alex Denver, 5, each returning totals of 41 points. It was Ciaran’s level par back 9, against 2 over from Alex, which swung the section in his favour. Just out of the prizes on 40 points was the hapless trio of Timmy Cummins, 5, Gary McKee, 9, and Billy Bateman, 11.

John McComb, 18, began to get himself into the mood for the long school holidays when he took the middle section with 39 points, 21 of which came on his way home. Michael McLaughlin, 15, also had 39 points but with only 18 of them coming on the back 9 he was to leave empty handed. Perhaps the biggest hard luck story might be told by Eugene Maguire, 14. He was just 3 over par after 12 holes but went on to drop 8 more over the closing 6 holes to find himself squeezed out of the prizes on the back 9.

The high section went to the extremely consistent John Menary with 40 points off 23, despite not scoring at the 4th.
