Good start for St Michael's
St. Michael's 2-11 St. Malachy's Belfast 0-10
St. Michael’s 0-15 Holy Cross Strabane 1-6
ST Michael’s have opened their MacLarnon campaign with two hard fought wins over St Malachy’s Belfast and Holy Cross Strabane.
In the opening fixture played in blustery conditions in Glenavy a strong second half showing turned the game in their favour. However, if this team has any desires on progressing further in the competition then they will need to up their performance levels. Gareth Morgan hit the opening point then a goal from Niall McConville created by a strong run by Niall McCann seemed to give the Lurgan school a perfect start but then a few wides and seven unanswered points from St Malachy’s gave them a three point cushion at the break. HT 1-1 to 0-7.
A Christopher McCafferty point and Paul McKenna goal at the beginning of the 2nd half put St Michael’s back in front and this time they backed it up with further scores. Points from Ciaran McKendry(2) and Thomas McAlinden (2) left five between the teams. St. Malachy’s responded with two points.
The Lurgan school then finished the stronger with scores from Thomas McAlinden (2), Christopher McCafferty, Ciaran McKendry and Niall McConville to leave the final score 2-11 to 0-10. It was a good defensive performance with Declan Haughey and Stephen Magee standing out.
In their second group match against a better side St Michael’s again produced a good second half performance to emerge victorious. Holy Cross went a point up before Niall Mc Cann(2), Thomas McAlinden and Niall McConville made it 0-4 to 0-1. Further points from Thomas McAlinden, Niall Mc Conville (2) and Niall Mc Cann left it 0-8 to 0-4 at half time.
A quickfire start to the second half strecthed the lead to 7 points. Christopher McCafferty, Thomas McAlinden and Niall McConville were the scorers but a goal for strabane kept the game interesting. Thomas McAlinden replied but two strabane points left it 1-6 to 0-12 with 10 minutes left. A furhter point from Thomas McAlinden and 2 from Niall McConville left the final score 0-15 to 1-6.
A couple of good results and St Michael’s now move on to their final group game against St Louis Kilkeel where they will need to be at their best to continue on their winning ways.
