Boyd sets up major fight bill

FRIDAY 15th February will see the 2013 kickboxing calendar kick off at the Belmont Hotel, Banbridge with a display from fighters gathered from across all corners of the province.

The brainchild of local Lurgan man, David Boyd, the former top ranked European title contender, turned promoter, has endeavoured to bring kickboxing back to the area.

David has promoted numerous shows in and around Craigavon over two decades, developing and building each event, to bigger and better levels. After years of hard work David has managed to bring together provincial and national titles on an amazing 15 fight bill.

While this event is one of the biggest kickboxing bills to be staged in the entire province, it doesn’t sacrifice quality for quantity. Every fight is an adult full contact match-up, no junior, nor light continuous or exhibitions on this top flight show. Indeed, such is the prestige of this fight night, over 60 kickboxers applied to compete on the bill, from nearly every club in Northern Ireland. Promoter Boyd is delighted at how the event has grown to the top level it has.

Yet it is a double celebration for the Fight Club NI, not only are they the host of the greatest event in the country, but their fighters are also topping the bill. Local favourite Derryadd’s own Gerard Doran, the current Northern Ireland light heavyweight Champion is set to add to his title with an All-Ireland challenge for the 79 kilo belt. Gerard is renowned as one of the stalwarts of Fight Club NI kickboxing. Coach Davy Boyd remarked, “Gerard is among the toughest fighters I’ve ever trained, he is willing to step in with any man, at any time.” A sentiment reflected by the fact that Gerard owns a NI light heavyweight title belt, having won it three times in emphatic style in less than a year – yet was keen for a new challenge at a lighter weight. Gerard is famed for his aggressive, non- stop punching and so his fight against the current all Ireland champion of Letterkenny promises to raise the roof.

The best fight of the night will be chosen by a local celebrity guest.

The line up is now set and all the training is done. Now all that remains is the sound of the bell and come Friday night at 7.30pm, the Belmont Hotel will ring with the cheers and roars of an expected capacity crowd. Tickets are £10, payable at the door. Come early, numbers are limited.
