Michaela the hero for College

LURGAN COLLEGE 2 STRATHEARN COLLEGE 1

LURGAN College Seconds survived a tense finish to defeat Strathearn School in the quarter-finals of the McDowell Cup.

It was a tense game with both teams fighting hard for a place in the semi-finals and Strathearn started off very strong and were attacking Lurgan’s circle right from the beginning.

Lurgan’s defence which included Rebecca McShane, Carla Webster, Louise McKitterick and captain, Sherrie Percy held them off and made some excellent tackles and clearances. They worked well together to protect the circle. Within a few minutes Lurgan began to fight back. There were some excellent passes in midfield and the play flowed between Samantha Bann, Tara McIlwaine and Laura King. Both Lurgan and Strathearn were playing some excellent hockey and the game became very exciting to watch. Both teams had a number of chances to score but the keepers were doing their job. Lurgan had a break and a superb goal from Chloe Neville was scored.

The second half was much the same, both teams battling and not giving up. Lurgan’s other forwards, Gemma McKitterick and Stacie McCann waiting for another break and another chance to strengthen the lead. However, Strathearn won a penalty corner and scored to level the tie.

The match went into extra time and silver goal. The extra time went very quickly, Strathearn and Lurgan having equal possession. Towards the end, in the last two minutes of play, Lurgan had possession and had a number of chances, but Strathearn’s defence were very good and in the last few seconds hit it out of play. With both teams deserving a place in the last four this match would end with strokes.

Lurgan went first and Louise McKitterick stepped up to score. Lurgan’s goalkeeper Michaela McNally had nerves of steel and saved the first stroke. Stoke takers came up one by one, Lurgan finding the net and Michaela saving again to leave the final 2-1 (3-1 strokes) to Lurgan College.

Lurgan College now meet Regent House Grammar School in the semis.
