Keep an eye on Andy says Gerard

RESERVES boss Gerard McMahon has tipped new signing Andy McCrory as a future Glenavon star, having played just one full game for the club’s second string.

The 19 year old winger, signed from Ballymacash Rangers in January, impressed the boss during Saturday’s 4-0 away victory against Ballymena United and McMahon is tipping him to hit the first team sooner rather than later.

“Andy made his full debut for us and was absolutely outstanding,” he said.

“He scored two and I don’t think he gave the ball away all day. Look out for him. He was training with the first team the other night and was outstanding and Gary’s thinking about throwing him into the first team.

“He’s a bit like Brian McCaul. He’s very quick, direct, can see a pass, can cross the ball and he doesn’t need taught anything, he could already make the step up.”

As for the rest of the team, Hamilton was delighted with his side’s display and highlighted the performance of defender Niall Lavery.

“We played very well,” he said.

“Andy Coleman in goal had very little to do because it was one of our best performances of the season. I said to them after the match that if they were given ratings, nobody would have been below a seven so that’s how well they played.

“Niall Lavery’s a player I don’t usually mention but he’s consistently good. He was the Youth Team’s Player of the Year last year and I probably expect too much of him but he’s constantly really good. He’s a no-nonsense, old-fashioned defender. He heads the ball, clears it, puts in tackles and reads the game well.”

First team players Chris Lavery and Cameron Grieve returned from injury in the victory, each playing an hour before being taken off.

McMahon said: “Chris and Cameron did well but I think reserve level is a bit below them now. They still have to put the effort in but they did well. They’re both coming back from injuries and I took them off after an hour. Hopefully they’ll get a bit longer in the next match.

“I have to pull Chris back sometimes. He goes for things be probably shouldn’t, coming back from injury and Grieve’s the same so I took them off as a precaution.”
