Matt receives hurling Hall of Fame award

KEADY native Matt Nugent, who has been residing in Lurgan since the 1950s, has just received the Hall Of Fame Award from the Lamh Dhearg Hurling Club, Keady.

He is only the second recipient of the Paddy McCormack ‘Spirit of Cloyne’ Hall of Fame Award.

Matt was an outstanding hurler with Armagh during the 1940s and 1950s winning Ulster Championship medals at club and county level.

In one Ulster final he scored three goals in three minutes, a unique achievement which will always be talked about in Armagh hurling history.

Matt himself, who is regarded as a true gentleman, recalls Bill Feeney from Antrim as the toughest man he came across, and the great Kevin Armstrong and Seamus ‘Stout’ McDonnell from Belfast as some of the best he encountered form his county playing days.
