Andrew in form on back nine

THERE was a good entry for last week’s Wednesday sweep at Lurgan Golf Club with 47 players managing a return of 37 points or better.

Forward tees, a shorter playing course and the necessary option of preferred lies through the green made the accumulation of points much easier.

There were two returns of 45 points but thanks to a better back nine it was Andrew Carville who emerged victorious. This twelve handicapper had an ordinary opening nine comprising seven bogeys to go alongside birdies on holes four and nine. He found a rich vein of form on the inward nine. A bogey at the sixteenth was his only blip. The rest of his score contained birdies and pars. Birdies came his way at holes ten, eleven and eighteen. This strong finish was instrumental in securing him the main prize.

Runner-up with an equally pleasing score of 45 points was Mark O’Neill. This eleven handicapper played solidly on both sides of the course. His opening nine included six pars and three bogeys. Holes six, seven and eight were the bogey holes. A run of birdie, par, birdie put him in good position for the back nine. Further pars were scored on holes fourteen, sixteen and seventeen. He concluded his round with a closing birdie and thus earned second spot.

Brian Curran came up trumps with a splendid 44 points to claim the third net award. Off his twenty six handicap Brian accumulated crucial pars at holes two, four, five, ten, seventeen and eighteen. Amazingly he recorded six double bogeys on his card and still posted this timely tally of 44 points.

The fourth and final net prize went to Derek Johnston. This 20 handicapper took the spoils with a rewarding 43 points. He had mediocre opening nine with just pars at holes two and four. He rallied on the homeward nine to obtain six pars and accrue a birdie on the twelfth. These vital pars were registered at holes ten, eleven, fourteen and on the closing three holes of play.

Two handicapper Francie Tallon claimed the weekly gross prize. A score of 37 gross points got him the nod. Over the eighteen holes he notched birdies at holes one, twelve, sixteen and eighteen. On the debit side he ran up bogeys on holes two, eleven and fourteen.
