Craigavon Lakes will host many of the sport’s leading anglers this weekend as competitors representing 10 nations tackle the 13th World Championships Predator Bank Fishing with Lures competition.

Team Ireland - including Lurgan’s Chris Laverty as reserve - line out alongside Portugal, Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, France, Russia, Italy and Romania for the international event organised by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland.

“It is wonderful to have this fantastic competition on our doorstep and we would encourage both fishing enthusiasts and those maybe not so familiar with the sport to come along and witness at first hand the exceptional skill involved in these World Championships,” said the Lord Mayor, Councillor Darryn Causby. “We look forward to extending a very warm welcome to the nations and hope they enjoy their angling experiences on our beautiful Lakes - and maybe even get a bit of time to explore this wonderful area too.

“So come on down, enjoy a day out and show Team Ireland your support!”

The championships operate on a points system andl run on Saturday and Sunday from 10-2 o’clock. Anglers’ focus will be on pike, perch and stocked rainbow trout - with all fish caught using barbless hooks, netted and returned immediately to the water.

The Craigavon Lakes are part of the public angling estate and fall under the direct remit of DCAL, who will prepare and stock the venue as well as providing the NCFFI with stewarding assistance.
