SINCE being invited to take part in local Primary School Rugby Blitzes, the boys at Drumgor Primary School, Craigavon, have swapped their football boots for rugby boots.

With the coaching support of Jonny Gillespie (Community Rugby Officer at the IRFU Ulster Branch), the players have been learning about scrums, side steps and tackling.

As P7 pupil Cai McDowell said, “I loved getting dirty playing in the rain, scoring tries and being able to run past the other team’s players.”

The boys now have Ravenhill in their sights as they prepare to play at Ulster Rugby headquarters in the Primary Schools Mini Rugby Festival on Friday 17th May. They will play against teams from across the Province and members of the Ulster squad will be watching from the sidelines and giving them some expert tips.

Local schools Dickson PS, Hardy Memorial PS, Millington PS, Moyallen PS, Tandragee PS, Waringstown PS will also take part in the Festival, which runs from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th may and is sponsored by Domino’s Pizza.
