Impressive back nine as Sean leads way

Over 150 players took to the fairways on Saturday at Silverwood Golf Club for the annual Hugh Wilson Shield which is celebrating 30 years in existence.

The winner with a valiant effort of 41 points was Sean Ashe. Playing off an 8 handicap Sean had a solid front nine with 6 pars and 3 bogeys recorded at holes 2, 5 and 6. His back nine was impressive with 5 pars, 2 bogeys (holes 10 and 15) and two great birdies at 13th and 18th for a gross 75 (+3).

Second, also with 41 points was Thomas Smyth (6) with an impressive gross 73 (+1). Thomas completed his front nine in level par with two birdies on the 4th and 8th holes. He dropped shots at the 3rd and 7th holes. His back nine was equally as impressive with two dropped shots at the 12th and 15th holes and a birdie at the 17th hole. Par scores were attained on the remaining holes.

Coming third, again with 41 points was Damian McCready playing off a 17 handicap. Damian’s highlights were a par score on the first hole followed by a good birdie at the short 4th. Damian then scored pars at the next five holes which greatly helped his scored card. He had 7 bogeys and 2 pars (10th, 18th holes) on his back nine for a solid round.

Gross prize as won by scratch golfer Fintan McAreavey with 38 gross points (-2 gross). 4 birdies at the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 18th holes were key highlights.

In fourth place also with a solid score of 41 points (gross 80) was Stephen Thompson playing off a 12 handicap. Steven got off to a flyer through nine holes with 24 points as he was level par with a bogey at the third and a birdie at the fourth hole. Steven had 17 points on his back nine with 4 pars in the last 5 holes helping him to 4th spot.

Fifth and a reward for his good form of late, was Chris Moran with 40 points. Chris (6) completed his round in +2 gross, 74.

Senior prize was won by Patrick McCaughley (40pts). Section winners: Low-Conor Hutchinson 40pts, Middle-David Ewing 39pts and High: Philip Colvin 37pts.
