CHARLY Shanks has won his second handball R48 Pro Stop, this time in Salt Lake City to hold on to the coveted WPH Number 1 spot.
Owing to his ranking, Shanks didn’t have to play a qualifying round and was through to the last 16 automatically. He progressed through the round of 16 and the quarter-finals on what appeared to be a different class from anyone else on show last weekend.
The semi-final against Sean Lenning (who had incidentally overcame Galway’s Martin Mulkerrins in his quarter-final) was somewhat of a show on it’s own. Albeit, a quick show as the Lurgan man was in a rush to book his place in the final, advancing on a scoreline of 25-3 in under 20 minutes.
In the final, the fans were treated to even more of what Shanks had to offer all weekend, top class handball. Luis Moreno may have gotten the better of Charly in the last two meetings, but the Orchard star clearly demonstrated how far he has come since his relocation to New York in 2011. Getting out of the blocks early, World Championship silver medallist Moreno couldn’t control the onslaught of Shanks who wrapped up proceedings 25-7. The scoreline undoubtedly reflecting the dominance of Shanks over the weekend.
The Clann Eireann man will now turn his attentions to the Players Championship which will take place in Seattle in early May.
Everyone at Armagh GAA Handball wish Charly every success in the up-coming games.
