LURGAN College Firsts defeated local rivals Portadown College 4-0 last Saturday in their final build up game to this week’s Senior Schools Cup Final.
The home side started a little slowly against a hard working and determined Portadown team and conceded an early penalty corner which was defended well by Bethany Barr getting out quickly on the striker.
Sister Serena was not to be out done and when the first College corner was awarded, she stepped up to deflect the ball home after a rasping strike from the edge of the circle. Some solid defensive work from the visitors, led by their goalkeeper prevented any further addition to the scoreline before the half time break.
After the whistle however, the College players moved up a gear and drove at the Portadown team time and again. Chloe McCann pounced on a loose ball within close range of the keeper and dispatched it into the back of the net. Julie Morrow added a third when some fantastic build up play saw the ball transfer from left to right and Julie’s outstretched stick guided it in front of the post, past a stranded keeper.
A fourth and final goal completed the tally when a penalty corner was awarded to Lurgan College and when the initial strike was blocked by the Portadown keeper, the ball fell to Hannah Grieve, who stepped up with a superb reverse stick shot which proved unstoppable.
This was good preparation for the College girls who play Victoria College Belfast in the Senior Schools Cup Final on Wednesday.
