LAST weekend the final ‘major’ competition at Lurgan Golf Club was decided. This was the final of the big matchplay event, the Club Cup.
This is one of the oldest formats in the club game and is accorded huge significance in many clubs. This final featured two of the young brigade in the club, Ben McKnight and Peter Cummins.
Both reached the final with useful notches under their belt as the competition progressed. It was littered with quality golf with birdies and pars being the order of the day.
Ben birdied holes one and ten but Peter countered with similar scores at holes seven and eight. Fortunes swayed throughout the match but a strong par on the seventeenth saw Peter home by the score of 2/1. He possibly has the distinction of being the youngest winner of this esteemed competition. Being a non-driver it will be interesting to see who will avail of the free parking space accorded for this victory.
