Tennis club completes finals at third time of asking

BALLYMENA Lawn Tennis Club's 13th annual Senior Championships finished on Saturday with the biggest event the Mixed Doubles Final.

Roger Henry and Kay Rainey came out the the winners in a most competitive match against Colin Smith and Karen Cherry in fine conditions after the worst weather in the club's history over the previous few weeks

This final match gave two players the chance of a triple win as Karen Cherry had already won the Ladies Singles and Ladies Doubles and Roger Henry the Mens Singles and Mens Doubles.

Congratulations go to both players on their exploits this year.

Veteran Player Fergus Barklie also had a Triple as it is his third time to win the Mens Doubles and is delighted still to be able to persuade good players like Roger to partner him!

Young Darren Tweed won his first title as Boys Champion narrowly beating Ian Wilson in a great competition.

The junior Doubles Championships have yet to be completed being held up by the wet weather.

The trophy presentation was one with a difference this year!

Instead of the council being represented by the mayor the club invited Jimmy Wright one of the Park Rangers to carry out this duty which he did with great dignity.

Jimmy like all the Rangers and staff in The Peoples Park are extremely willing and helpful which makes it a pleasure to work with them.

Fergus Barklie, the club chairman and championship organiser, thanked all the players for taking part and Roger Henry reciprocated by thanking Fergus for all his time and work for the club on behalf of the players.
