Sarsfields triumph in Headley final
SARSFIELDS 2-12 TIR NA NOG 1-11
DESPITE the poor conditions underfoot both sides served up an exciting and entertaining game of football which was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd in the Stannel Headley Cup final.
Sarsfields had the perfect start to this match with a first minute goal when Stefan Green got the vital touch on an incoming ball sending it to the top corner of the net. Sarsfields led by five points going into the last ten minutes of the opening half, with the Sarsfields defence holding out well against several Tir na ng attacks.
The Portadown side scored 1-2 to draw level coming up to the break before Colin Stevenson sent over an injury time free to give the Highmoss a slender half time lead.
The second half was very close with the sides being level on several occasions. The breakthrough for Sarsfields came mid way through the half when Thomas Smyth was first to react to a loose ball in the square, sending it to the Tir na ng net.
Sarsfields held out to win by four points. Jason McDowell, Christopher McGaughey and Paul McGeown stood out for Sarsfields, but Colin Stevenson with a tally of six points was named as man of the match.
