Sarsfields triumph in sevens tournament
SARSFIELDS minors won the Michael Tighe Memorial seven-a-side tournament held at Wolfe Tones on Saturday.
As in the previous year’s final, Sarsfields and Maghery were level at the final whistle. However when it came down to the next score being the winner Thomas McAlinden proved to be the hero for Sarsfields by scoring the winning point.
In the group stages Sarsfields lost the first game to St. Paul’s but won the final two matches against Madden and Tir na ng. Coming second in their group they came up against St. Peter’s who had won their section. In a tight game Sarsfields came through with two points to spare.
The Sarsfields management team were pleased with the strength of the Highmoss men, and in particular how St. Peter’s found difficulty in breaking through the Highmoss defence. Sarsfields faced Maghery in a repeat of last year’s final, and again the sides could not be separated at full time. This year though Sarsfields had the resources to snatch the winning point in extra time to lift the trophy.
Highmoss captain Neil McGeown was presented the trophy by Malachy Tighe from the Wolfe Tones club.
