Sarsfields under 21s win Byrne Cup final

THE final piece of silverware on offer from the 2011 season was won by the Sarsfields under 21s.

They comfortably defeated an understrength St. Peter’s side in the John Byrne Cup final played at Lismore last Sunday.

The recent inclement weather had postponed this particular game, but the tournament itself had provided valuable game time for local under 21 teams who had been preparing for the Championship.

Although former Armagh minor player Niall McConville had been thwarted on at least three occasions by Sarsfields keeper Conan Murray during the sixty minutes, it was a Michael Stevenson brace of goals which set the Hoops up for victory.

Young debutants Niall Kerr, who also found the net, Caolan Skelton and Gareth McGeown all showed up well in the win.

As for St. Peter’s, they would be better than this scoreline suggested and their young team can look forward to consolidating their position in division two next season.
