Seven Towers 'karate kids' excel in finals

CHUJO Karate Association Autumn Individual Kata and Kumite Championships took place last weekend at the Seven Towers Leisure Centre.

The large crowd of spectators were treated to some exciting contests in the kata and kumite events.

Start time was 10am and due to the large amount of entries the finish time was 5pm.

Organiser and Chief Kata Referee was Mr Dan Redmond. Senior Kumite Referee was Mr Steven Surgeoner. Other officials attending were Mr Keith Millar and Mr Ernest Tuff. Time keeper/Score marker was Miss Nadine Simpson.

Kata was performed as solo and the participants were judged on various aspects of their performance. After two hours the kata events ended and then one hour was allowed for a lunch break.

Kumite events commenced sharp at 1pm. The younger members wore body and head guards to help reduce injuries. The local STLC karate club had outstanding success with the following results:

Female Kata Event 1: gold medal - Laura Burns; silver – Rebecca Burns; bronze – Nicola Lamont.

Female Free Sparring Event 1: gold - Catherine McGillian.

Male Kata Event 1: gold - Stephen Bell.

Male Kata Event 2: silver - Mark O'Connor; bronze - Mark Mc Ilhagga.

Male Free Sparring Event 1: gold - Mark O'Connor.

Male Free Sparring Event 2: gold - Ethan Crawford; silver - Adrian McConnell; third - Jacob Hanlon.

Male Free Sparring Event 3: silver - Mark McIlhagga.

Male Free Sparring Event 4: silver - David O'Neill.

Best Technique Award - Ethan Crawford.

Chief Coach Dan Redmond complimented the success of Seven Towers Leisure Centre karate club members and he said that all of very their hard work is now starting to produce the results that they justly deserve. He also complimented club coaches who helped prepare the competitors.

Seven Towers Karate Club meets for practice each Wednesday - Children's class, Minor Hall, 7pm and Adult class, Main Hall, 8pm. There are also beginners', advanced and improvers' classes.
