Tannaghmore celebrate
IF any sign was ever needed to highlight the renaissance of Gaelic Football in the Lurgan area, then it was shown at the presentation night at Tannaghmore Primary School.
Parents, family members and the members of the successful teams gathered at the school to celebrate a highly successful 2007.
Speaking about the revival of Gaelic Games in Tannaghmore Schools, Coaching Officer for the last five years, Paul Kelly, praised teachers and all those involved.
He outlined how in 2002 the school principal, Mr Peter O’Loan, his teachers and all those interested in Gaelic Games had sat down and drawn up a five year plan for coaching in the school.
And on the night the school was celebrating not only the winning of the County and Ulster Primary Schools Championship, but also the winning of the very prestigious All-Ireland Award for best coaching structures of any school in Ireland.
Whilst the success story was down in no small measure to the school staff, special mention should also go to the two local clubs, Clann Eireann and St Peter’s who always had their coaches on hand to coach the children after school hours. It also typified the great progress that has been made under Paul Kelly, the County Coaching Officer since 2002.
Presentations were made to Jimmy Smyth for his help and assistance with the application to the National Committee of Cumann Na Bunscol for the coaching award.
Liam McCorry, Club Development Officer for North Armagh, presented the Edmund Murray Cup for the winning of the Armagh Championship to team captain Matthew Mulholland.
The McGreevy Cup for the Ulster Championship success was then presented to team manager Kevin Creery. The All-Ireland award for the Best Coaching Structures was then accepted by school principal Peter O’Loan.
Tannaghmore have coaching that takes place on a weekly basis in Gaelic Football for both boys and Girls, Hurling, Camogie and also Rounders Part of the application for the award was to present a 16 minute DVD illustrating aspects of coaching in action.
There were 150 entrants nationwide, which was then reduced to 50, then to a shortlist of five from which Tannaghmore eventually emerged as the winner. This was obviously a tremendous achievement for both the school and Cumann Na Bunscol in Armagh.
Peter O’Loan on accepting the award had a special mention for Jimmy Smyth, Paul Kelly, all the coaching staff at the school and local clubs Clann Eireann and St Peter’s.
