YOUNG entrepreneur David Porter doesn't mix business and pleasure but seems to have a fair grasp of both.
Along with his friend and business partner, Scott Lilburn, David runs Pure Torque - a car remapping and chip tuning service.
The 19-year-old from Shane Park in Lurgan has just finished year one of a pharmacy course at Queen’s during which he manag
ed to run the business in the evenings.
David and Scott met at Lurgan College and have been in business together for one and a half years.
“We’re based in Lurgan but we go all over the north,” said David. “There’s not too many others doing what we’re doing.”
He explained what Pure Torque was all about: “Re-mapping is the re-programming of your car’s engine control unit. This can increase turbo diesels and petrol turbo cars by 35% on bhp and 45% on torque, non-turbo diesels can be increased by 10-15%. It involves taking the car manufactures programme and customising it to suit the customers' requirements.
“The tuning of your vehicle is done through your car’s OBD II diagnostic socket without the involvement of having to solder the ECU of the car. The re-mapping is an invisible type of tuning that can’t be traced by the opening of the car’s ECU.
“It is also possible to re-programme the original manufacturer’s file back into any car for the simple reason of being sold on or anything else in general.”
Speaking of the reason for getting involved in remapping and chip tuning cars David said: “I raced scramblers when I was younger. I just sort of got into it when I got my first car - a Seat Ibiza.”
David, who’s now driving a remapped and chip tuned VW Golf, is also into watersports and fishing (when he feels the need to relax).
He also likes to socialise, the Coach on a Friday night being one of his favourite hang outs.
But he pointed out: “Weekdays are for business, weekends are for pleasure.”

What is your most vivid childhood memory?
I think it would be the day I took my go-kart to Craigavon lakes for a spin. I was about five or six years old and had had a great day on it. We were getting ready to go home and I went to get out of the kart, my foot got caught on the accelerator cord and the kart took off and smashed into a concrete bollard. I flew out of the kart and knocked myself out. As I sit here now I can still remember every detail until the second I hit the bollard….not good.
What did you enjoy most about your early school days?
I liked the fact that my older sister always had loads of spellings and tables to do when she got home from school and all I had to do was play.
What do you like most about the weekends?
I like jet skiing, kneebording and a bit of fishing to relax. I also race a 1/5-scale model car every other Saturday at Craigavon model car club. Also love going out with friends at the weekend for a bit of socialising.
What sport do you enjoy playing or watching?
I really like playing a bit of 5 a side with mates and I also enjoy playing badminton and squash.
