LURGAN painter Kelly Gallagher brought some colour to the 'MAIL' office this week.
The talented artist, winner of the Diageo Best Emerging Artist in 2004, has been exhibiting her collection of vibrant city scapes to great praise in galleries up and down the country.
Her skill at capturing urban landscapes has now given her a great
excuse to visit the most beautiful cities in the world - not bad given she loves to travel.
29-year-old Kelly and her husband Conor recently celebrated a new arrival to their Lake Street home in the shape of baby boy Reese.
Kelly took some time away from her painting when Reese, who is now five months old, was born, but she's concentrating on her art again for a number of upcoming exhibitions.
Kelly, who goes by the name of McClusky, but has retained her surname of Gallagher for her artwork, got into painting city scapes after getting a commission from Barnabas Ventures.
"I'm very into colour. I'm enjoying the city scapes at the moment. Most of the ones I've done are of Belfast."
She said it was a good excuse to travel the world and paint different cities - Barcelona and New York being next on the agenda.
"I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I left school," said the former St Mary's student.
"I was put off doing art by people saying to me, "What sort of job are you going to get with that?""
Eventually she ignored the doubters and did a foundation course at Lurgan Tech before doing a BA Honours degree in Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Ulster.
Since then she's scooped the emerging artist award and landed several high profile commissions including Debenham's in Craigavon.
Her most recent exhibtion was in Down Arts Centre and in a couple of weeks she'll display her work in the Gallery M in North Street.

If you could trade places with anyone else for the day who would it be and why?
Probably a singer. Someone like Gwen Stefani on a day when she's in concert.

Describe your perfect day...
I'd spend it with my husband and my wee boy. We'd drive somewhere nice for lunch. I love food, especially desserts. Then we'd drive somewhere where there's a beach. On the way home we'd stop off at a travel agents and book a holiday to New York.

If you could change your job what would you do instead?
I love what I do - I wouldn't change it.

Party animal or couch potato?
I used to be a bit of a party animal when I was younger. Now I'd rather travel and go out for dinner. If I'm sitting in I like to watch a good film. Jerry Maguire or Something About Mary are my favourites.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years time?
Still doing art. Having exhibitions in London, New York hopefully. I'd like to have more children too.

Who or what has been the most influential force in your life?
Early on my parents, Frank and Betty, most definitely. They always encouraged me in everything I did. My husband has been a great influence on my art. It can be very hard to keep going and he's always a big encouragement.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you bring with you?
A laptop with an everlasting battery. A never ending supply of chocolate. My art materials.

Would you describe yourself as competitive?
I don't think I'm really competitive. I suppose maybe in terms of art when I see my work on the wall I want it to be the best. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to painting, but not really at anything else.

Are you environmentally friendly?
I do try to be. I try to recycle and I have one of those bags for life - though I keep forgetting it when I go to the supermarket. I tried the re-usable nappies with Reese, but then you have to put them in the washing machine anyway, so it cancels out the good work.

Could you bear to be parted from your mobile phone for a week?
Yep, no problem. I like it when you go away somewhere and you can forget about your phone. I use mine mostly for work.
