SEAN Hegarty has been a stand-up comedian for just a month but has already made an appearance at the widely respected Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The 24-year-old from Carrigart Manor has had four gigs so far - Edinburgh, Derry, Dublin and Liverpool.
Later this month he's taking his act closer to home with a gig at the Railway Bar in the town, supporting local band captain Kennedy.
Sean -
a care assistant at the Beeches in Aghalee - was inspired to try stand-up through his i-pod – listening to comedy routines and thought he could come up with the sort of stories that could make people laugh.
He began preparing his material, noting down funny thoughts and jokes and before long he had eight pages of material.
After numerous calls around clubs trying to secure his first gig he decided to try his luck at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Thanks to cheap air fares he flew over and stayed two nights – with a gig on each night.
It was a baptism of fire for Sean: "I loved it. The first night I was petrified but the second night the crowd was very good, I just went on from there."
At his Liverpool gig Sean got another taste of the horrors of stand-up: "The act just before me lasted only two minutes. He said 'I'm sorry I have to go', went into the audience, got his coat and left.
"I had to go on straight after him. Once you get the first few laughs you lighten up and realise people are there for a good time,"
Of taking his act to the home audience Sean said: "I think the best place to start is at home. People do want each other to do well in this town, which is good."
He also had good encouragement from his gig in Dublin – an open mic night in which the audience voted him into first place – earning him a certificate. "I'd rather have won the one in Liverpool – it had a £200 prize," said Sean.
Sean is married to wife Noleen and they have two boys, James (6) and Charlie (4). They have a third child on the way.
As for Sean's act, he describes himself as a cross between Roy Chubby Brown and Jimmy Carr.
You can catch Sean's act at The Railway Bar on October 17 – don't miss it!
