Like Ex Pat (August 6,) I have read the policy document on an alternative way forward produced by Jim Allister's TUV. Like him I too was terribly disappointed by what I read.
The proposal to substitute a power sharing executive including Sinn Fe
in with a power sharing super council including Sinn Fein greatly disappointed me.
However, this policy is to be done in such a way as to put responsibility for many of the most controversial issues back into the hands of Direct Rule Ministers who have already indicated their agreement with the position adopted by republicans thus removing the ability of unionists to block or veto republican demands.
It is a win/win scenario for republicans – they continue to share power with the victims of the IRA campaign while Westminster ensures their ongoing demands are met with no effective veto over them.
When Jim Allister ran for Europe under the DUP banner he did so fully endorsing its 'Devolution Now' document which proposed a so-called 'corporate Assembly' in which SF – without any decommissioning or any support for policing – would sit as a full partner.
People like Stephen Herron are loyal Ulstermen and true unionists of long standing. I have no doubt that when they left the DUP it caused them great pain. I cannot believe that people like that would now accept this policy of replacing a power sharing executive including SF with a power sharing super council including SF.
As the TUV leadership prepares the way for their sell out I would urge people of influence like that to make their voice heard before it is too late.
