American razzmatazz hits town

Baton twirling majorettes were poised to bring a little bit of American razzmatazz to Lurgan in 1989.

A branch of the Northern Ireland Drill Team was formed in the town.

The budding majorettes were put through their paces were put through their paces by Lurgan girl Jackie Glover who was a qualified instructor and had taken part in the British Championships.

“It is an American phenomenon which is spreading rapidly through the United Kingdom,” said Jackie.

“It is great fun and extremely useful in terms of fitness and physical exercise.”

The majorettes, which also involved cheer leading, were booked to appear at the Lord Mayor’s Show in Belfast and some charity events.
