The event at the Mayor’s Parlour in Carrickfergus Town Hall also praised the group’s commitment to improvements in Whitehead.

Speaking at the reception, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Paul Reid said: “Mid and East Antrim has quickly established a reputation as an award-winning borough, and a major contribution to this success is volunteers, such as Brighter Whitehead.

"Whitehead has achieved great successes over the years, including Silver Gilt at the 2016 Britain in Bloom awards in the Small Town Category, and winning the Best Kept Railway Halt at the Ulster in Bloom awards year after year.”

Stephen Daye, Head of Parks and Open Spaces at MEABC added: “Having worked with Brighter Whitehead for over a decade, there have been a very many highs and few lows. From floral displays in the town, to tree planting at Diamond Jubilee Wood, and countless clean ups, Whitehead continues to improve and I look forward to another decade of partnership.”

Bill Pollock, chairman of Brighter Whitehead, said: “Brighter Whitehead grow all our own floral bedding. This is then displayed around Whitehead each summer. Brighter Whitehead is a year-round job, but we have some absolutely fantastic volunteers who are dedicated to making Whitehead all the Brighter and I would like to thank them all once again. Thank you to the Council for their continued support.

“Brighter Whitehead were delighted with the outcome of our latest project – restoring an old plough and willow weaving a life-size horse and plough sculpture, which can be viewed at the Bank House. We have more initiatives planned for 2018.”

Brighter Whitehead meet weekly and are always on the lookout for new volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Bill Pollock on 028 9335 8231
