Anderson praises PSNI anti-burglary operation

A PSNI anti-burglary scheme, which is seeking to reduce the number of burglaries in Northern Ireland has been welcomed.

The operation also seeks to apprehend those responsible for conducting burglaries, and will involve the deployment of sniffer dogs among other crime-preventing measures.

DUP MLA Sydney Anderson a former member of the Stormont Justice Committee, commented: “I fully welcome the launch of this major anti-burglary operation, which will run for four weeks and will cover every part of Northern Ireland. Officers from Districts and detectives from Reactive and Organised Crime Branch will work together with officers in Tactical Support Groups and Roads Policing to raise the visible police profile against burglaries and those who carry out such crime.

“This operation will involve mounting vehicle checkpoints, carrying out searches at premises of interest, deploying cash sniffer dogs and also providing relevant advice and information to residents and business owners on how to properly secure their property.”

The MLA continued,

“We are all fully aware of the worrying amount of burglaries that have taken place across the Upper Bann constituency in recent months and therefore I hope that this anti-burglary operation will have some success in deterring the occurrence of such burglaries whilst also apprehending those who are responsible. Notably, 7,266 burglaries took place at domestic and business premises across Northern Ireland between the start of April 2015 and the 25th January, 2016. As such I welcome the fact that burglary hotspots are to receive increased PSNI attention through this operation.

“We must recognise that we all have a role to play in tackling the scourge of burglaries. It is also important that we all take measures to ensure that our properties are secure and that we also be vigilant. I hope that this PSNI operation goes some way towards combating this type of criminal activity and will yield results in our efforts to take the perpetrators off the streets.”
