Portadown man Lorne McKittrick has gained his dream job with Liberty IT in Belfast, while completing his studies at Belfast Metropolitan College.
Lorne achieved his Foundation degree in Software Engineering, during which he was able to combine academic study with on-the-job experience. Foundation degrees are higher education qualifications delivered in further education colleges through partnerships with universities and employees, enabling students to develop their skills and career prospects whilst also benefitting employers and their businesses.
Having always wanted to study Software Engineering, Lorne heard about the Foundation degree during an open day at Belfast Met. During the second year of his Foundation degree, Lorne secured a 12 week placement with Liberty IT, who were so impressed by his contribution that they extended his contract into the summer. After completing the Foundation degree, Lorne was offered a full-time job with Liberty IT, who encouraged him to continue his Honours degree studies by allowing day release to continue his studies at university.
“I have gained the necessary skills and confidence to start my career in the Software Engineering industry, thanks to the new skills and knowledge I acquired through the Foundation degree,” Lorne shared.
“The nature of the Foundation degree meant that, within two years, I was in a position to work full-time in the software engineering sector. The smaller classes also made it easier to interact more with the lecturer, which was beneficial.”
Liberty IT has engaged with Belfast Met on a range of initiatives. For information on Foundation degrees and the opportunities they can open up, visit www.nidirect.gov.uk/skills or phone 03002007876.
