Lurgan abattoir taken over by Loughgall firm

A Lurgan slaughterhouse has been taken over by a Loughgall firm for an undisclosed sum.

Oakdale Meats has been taken over by a Loughgall meat firm. Hewitt Meats.

It is understood the jobs of those currently working there are secure.

Family-owned Hewitt Meats, which currently process more than 1,000 cattle per week in their deboning facility in Loughgall, supplies butchers and supermarkets throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe.

Oakdale Meats, which is a major international meat company, put its main abattoir in Lurgan up for sale for £1.5m last April, Property agents Osborne King said the 1.4 acre site on Annesborough Road is set up for the slaughter of cattle, sheep and deer.

The abattoir is close to another premises run by Irish meat giant ABP, at Annesborough Industrial Estate. Oakdale Meats also has premises on the Coalisland Road in Dungannon. Jonathan Keys of Osborne King said there had been considerable interest in the business.
