The Market Place Theatre in Armagh is set for a packed season as the new programme of events from January to June kicks off. The programme of events on offer reinforces the venue’s reputation as one of the premier Arts Centres in Ireland and is packed full of events including sensational shows, wonderful workshops and exciting exhibitions for all ages.
Whatever your preference, be it drama, comedy, ballet, music, art, or perhaps learning a new craft or skill, the Market Place Theatre surely has something to interest you.
Drama lovers are in for a real treat with some excellent offerings. Local favourites, Armagh Theatre Group kick off the season with the black comedy ‘Loot’, whilst Tim McGarry takes to the stage in ‘Stand Up Man’. Traditional classics also feature strongly with Oscar Wilde’s ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’, Brian Friel’s ‘Molly Sweeney’, John B. Keane’s ‘The Love-Hungry Farmer’ and James Joyce’s ‘Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man’. New and innovative offerings include ‘The Unremarkable Death Of Marilyn Monroe’ by Dyad Productions and ‘The Nose’ by Bruiser Theatre Company.
Those looking for a laugh will have comedy aplenty with returning favourites such as Neil Delamere, Mickey Bartlett and Jason Byrne as well as the new addition ‘Foil Arms and Hog’.
If music is your thing, you won’t be disappointed with the best of classical, folk, traditional, rock and pop on offer. ‘Magical Mozart By Candlelight’ is a sumptuous show bringing to life the world of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you enjoy Big Bands, you’re in for a treat with The PM Big Band and The Balmoral Big Band both taking to the stage this season. The Three Tenors return with their popular uplifting performance, whilst Cara Dillon will showcase her exquisite singing voice which has made her one of Ireland’s greatest singers. Or why not try our Jazz Supper Clubs, which feature a tantalizing combination of wonderful music and delicious cooking.
And there’s plenty to entertain the children too! Two of Northern Ireland’s best children’s theatre companies are back – Cahoots NI with ‘Nivelli’s War’ and Replay Productions with ‘A Boy And His Box’. Ballet Theatre UK will also feature with a family-friendly production of ‘The Little Mermaid’. And Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale will be brought to life when the ‘Jungle Book’ is staged in May.
The workshop programme on offer has been extended with a range of new and exciting workshops for both adults and children including Hat Couture, Burano Lace Masks, 3D Felted Forms, Ceramic Candelabras, Upcycled Furniture and many, many more.
