SINN Fein has said a decision on leisure services charges could leave the council open to a legal challenge.
Sinn Féin Cllr Tommy O’Connor accused the DUP of being ‘irresponsible’ after Council ignored advice from the Leisure Services Director on the appropriate rate for facility charges.
“The Leisure Services Committee had recommended that all fees charged to Sports Clubs should be brought into line. This would have ensured an equal charging rate and ended the practice of supplying cricket pitches at a disproportionately low charge.”
“The current charging system costs the ratepayers but perhaps more worrying is the fact that Council ignored the Director’s advice. He had advised that charging different rates placed Council in breach of equality legislation and could result in a legal challenge at a potentially high cost for our ratepayers. Despite this advice and the recommendation from the Committee the only party to oppose the DUP proposal was Sinn Féin.”
