Reversed into parked car and drove away

While reversing to allow a car to pass a Lurgan woman struck a parked car and drove on without reporting the accident.

Karen Singleton (46), Pollock Mews, Lurgan, was fined £150 last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention on December 9 last year.

For failing to stop after an accident she was fined £60 and given six points while fines of £40 were imposed for failing to remain and failing to report an accident. The court heard that the injured party reported that his car had been hit by another car outside his girlfriend’s house at Toberhewny Lodge.

Police went to the registered owner. There was damage to her car and she said: “I didn’t realise I damaged it.”

She explained that she felt that a car in front of her should have given way but she had to reverse. She heard a noise but thought she didn’t have to report it because there had not been any damage.

Mr Pat Vernon, representing the defendant, said his client was coming out of a side road and going across a main road into another side road.

He explained that a car came into the opposite direction from the side road and there was not room to pass. She reversed and clipped the parked car.

Mr Vernon added that Singleton did not see any damage and she left because her daughter had rang her to say that her partner was hitting her. She wanted to get to her daughter’s house.
