A LOCAL councillor has lambasted the use of gunfire in a residential area of Lurgan just days after the brutal slaying of innocent children in the USA.
Sinn Fein’s Tommy O’Connor said there was ‘no justification’ for the attack at a flat in Dingwell Park in Taghnevan.
A number of loud bangs were heard on Sunday night between 10.30pm and 11pm.
Police investigating said the window of a flat was damaged with what appears to be a gunshot.
The flat was empty at the time and no one was injured.
Mr O’Connor called on those responsible for firing a shotgun in Taghnevan to consider the outcome of such irresponsible actions.
“Given the horrific results of irrational gun use in America at the weekend it is incredible that anyone would discharge a weapon in a built up area within a few days of this happening,” he said
“There is no justification or excuse for such a stupid action and we can be grateful that no-one was injured.”
SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly said: “This is a deeply worrying escalation of anti-social behaviour in this area into wanton violence and it is essential that those involved face the criminal justice system.
“There needs to be an effective response to this and a concerted effort made to put in place measures to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in this area. This will need to involve everyone in Taghnevan working together for the benefit of all.”
Mayor of Craigavon Carla Lockhart also condemned the shooting. The DUP councillor encouraged anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
Detectives are working to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and appealed for information. You can contact them on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
