Ball tug toy

Take an old t-shirt, pair of scissors and a tennis ball and you'll be able to put together this great tug toy for your four-legged friend.

The process won't take too long either - all you have to do is cut the shirt in three places, wrap the ball inside, then cinch the shirt together.

Denim dog toy

For something super easy to keep your dog entertained, take an old pair of jeans and use them to fashion a simple denim toy to pull on.

Easy directions on how to make one can be found at this link.

T-shirt cat toy

You can also use old t-shirts to make a cat toy. It doesn't require any sewing and is a great use of something you might have otherwise gotten rid of.

Cat wand

This video gives great instructions on how to make a wand toy that your cat will love batting its claws at.

This one requires a few more materials than others - leather and cord thread, wire cutters, pliers, a towel, superglue, felt and a bell - so it may be best to skip if you're less well-stocked on craft supplies.

Simple sock toy

Have an odd sock lying around without a pair? Why not use it to make this ultra-simple dog toy which your furry friend will love chewing on?

All you need is a sock, string, and an empty plastic bottle. Full instructions can be found here.

Sweet potato chew toy

If you have a spare sweet potato, try making this fairly sturdy chew toy - all you'll need is a piece of rope and the potato.

You can find instructions on how to make it in this video.

Toilet roll treat toy

Make use of every bit of your precious toilet roll, and jazz up an inner cardboard tube for your cat to play with.

All you need to do is stuff some treats inside, fold it up and let the fun begin. Instructions can be found for the toy here.

Homemade squeak toy

If you've held on to the squeaky part from a toy your dog has previously destroyed, don't throw it away. Instead, give it a new life with this tutorial on how to make your own DIY dog toy.

Interactive dog treat toy

Want to make your pooch work for their treat? This more complex tutorial uses a PVC pipe and a drill to create an interactive feeder that'll keep both you and your pet entertained.

Cardboard cat scratcher

If you've got lots of spare cardboard lying around from deliveries, you can utilise it to build this rather impressive skyscraper scratcher for your cat.
