Knockout start for Craigavonboxers at first competitive bout

The first taste of competitive boxing for members of Craigavon Boxing Club proved a knock-out as they came home champions.

Martin Casey and Paulius Pouilaits, secured titles at the recent Armagh and Downs Boxing Championships held in Banbridge ABC.

Martin, (14) boxing in the 69 kilos category scored a TKO in the first round while Paulius (14) won on points in the 60 kilos category.

Brendan Creaney, head coach at Craigavon Boxing Club was delighted with their performances.

“It was their first competitive bout so to come home a champion is fantastic,” enthused Brendan.

“The other lads did really well too and it was a good experience for them. Our next target is the Nine Counties and as we look ahead we will target the Mid Ulster Championships, but we will just take it one stage at a time.”

Craigavon Boxing Club started three years ago and are based in the Eire Og Club. Training in on Monday and Wednesday nights with the junior class from 6 to 7pm and the seniors from 7 to 9pm.

“We have a great bunch of kids who are very enthusiastic and willing to learn. We have boys and girls from the age of 8 and upwards.

“If they are in with us they are off the streets and learning a sport and building up their fitness.”
