Charity match on Saturday

THE annual Sean Creaney Memorial Cup game between Lurgan Celtic and Taghnevan Harps takes place this Saturday.

Sean was a prolific goalscorer for Lurgan Celtic until his untimely death of cancer in January 2000 aged just 27.

Sean was born in Taghnevan and each year Celtic and The Harps join forces to raise much needed funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of Sean and to celebrate the close bond between both clubs.

Last July Barry ‘Bap’ Shanks, who was a Harps fanatic, passed away and as a mark of respect the organisers of last year’s event made a donation to PIPS suicide awareness.

This year, and from now on, all money raised will be split between both charities in memory of these two men who grew up together and lived only streets apart.

Some ‘legends’ and old team mates of Sean will be dusting off the boots and appearing including Finty McConville, Gary Haire, Marty Heaney and Stephen Maguiness.

There is also family entertainment including bouncy castles, face painting, penalty kick competition and a barbecue.

The entertainment then moves to Centrepoint Bar that evening where local band ‘On The Rip’ will be performing, starting at 10pm.

It’s hoped that a large crowd will attend both events and help raise cash for these two worthwhile charities.
