Cricket season begins this weekend

THE local cricket scene returns this weekend with Waringstown at home to Ballymena while Lurgan Cricket Club travel to Downpatrick.

Waringstown will be aiming to match the dizzy heights they reached last season after they won the Irish Senior Cup and the Northern Cricket Union Challenge Cup.

Last season’s league runners up Waringstown take on last year’s third placed side Ballymena in a tough opening fixture. The club will be without the services of Obus Pienaar for their 2012 campaign after he was ruled out with a back injury by his franchise club, the Knights.

Pienaar’s replacement is all rounder and fellow South African Glen Addicott.

The ball sponsor for this weekend’s Ballymena game is Eric Moore.

Last year’s Ulster Bank League Section One Champions Lurgan will want to repeat their success with another table topping season.

The club has been training for the past nine weeks to prepare for a difficult season ahead.

Waringstown face Ballymena before travelling to Lisburn and CIYMS, while Lurgan travel to Downpatrick and Muckamore before their first home game against Bangor.
