David to defend title

LURGAN’s David Acum will be defending his title this year at the Ulster Junior Open Tennis Championships at the Belfast Boat Club.

And a local firm, Clubworld Travel, will be sponsoring the event.

The tournament, which draws over 400 entrants from all over Ireland and UK will be held at the Belfast Boat Club from Saturday, July 21, to Saturday, July 28.

The Belfast Boat Club is extremely grateful to Mrs Delia Aston, proprietor at CLUBWORLD Travel for her generous support. The company, which specialises in luxury holidays, cruises, weddings and honeymoons started life in Lurgan 22 years ago. It now has six branches throughout Northern Ireland employing 24 staff.

Asked about her involvement Delia said: “As well as the obvious health benefits it is great to see young people competing and having fun outdoors. I am delighted to be involved with the great sport of tennis and in particular this tournament which attracts various levels of players from all over the country.”

Spectators will be treated to a great week of tennis.

Lurgan’s David Acum is the defending champion on the boys side. Last year when he was just 16 he won the under 18s singles against Ben Kelly of CIYMS so he will be keen to retain his title.

Megan McGreevy from Newcastle won the girls under 18s for the past two years. Currently playing and training in France it has not yet been confirmed if Megan will return to defend her title.

What keeps the Clubworld Travel Ulster Junior Open ahead of its rivals is that there is something for everyone regardless of whether it is a player taking part in a tournament for the very first time or a hardened competitor who has played at Ulster or Irish level.

Entrants are in good hands as the event is run by the Boat Club Tennis Academy. Chris Sanlon is tournament director and Ben Neal who heads up the academy is referee.

Alongside the top Ulster juniors there are novice events for those who are not as experienced or have recently started playing tennis.

Entries are open until Tuesday, July 17, For more information or to enter the tournament online go to the tournament website – www.ulster-junior-open.org
