The 25-year-old, who played for Ballinamallard last season, agreed a contract to keep him at Mourneview Park until the end of the season.

With two goalkeepers suspended and John Connolly injured manager Gary Hamilton was left to play either himself or Brian McCaul, who took over on Tuesday night after Andy Coleman’s red card, on Saturday if no-one could be found in time.

“It’s a big relief,” admitted manager Hamilton. “We just did not know what would happen. To have all three of the club goalkeepers out at the one time is a nightmare, but we have managed to get James on board.

“He has played in the Premiership and helped Ballinamallard gain promotion. It’s a big chance for him too and from what I am told he has the potential to do well.”

Ironically James will be back at Ferney Park sooner than he thought, making his debut against Ballinamallard on Saturday.

“This opportunity has come up with Glenavon and I jumped at the chance,” said James. “Glenavon’s a good club and to get playing in the Premiership again is fantastic. It is going to be a bit strange playing against my former club but I am looking forward to it.”
