Comber 70 Lurgan 78
Lurgan travelled to Comber in the third round of the IBA senior cup and came away victorious after a hard fought game.
Lurgan settled well and had built up a 9 shot advantage after 5 ends 24-15, a lead the home team would reduce to 5 shots by the mid-point as Lurgan led 38-33. Lurgan sprung back to life to extend their lead 57-41 and by the 19th end Comber had closed the deficit back to within 3 shots.
On this occasion Lurgan would not be denied as they kept the lead to the finish, winning 78-70.
On Rink 1, Bobby Boness, Sam Neill, Pete McGrail and skip Alan Briggs settled quickly building up a 6-2 lead after 5 ends. They continued to build on this lead increasing it to 6 shots at the halfway stage 11-5 and maintaining their advantage 14-8 at the three quarter distance, the only stage of the game the Lurgan four trailed was 17-16 down going into the final end, and with the overall balance of the game on the line Lurgan secured 2 shots to win the rink by a single shot 18-17.
On Rink 2, Ivor Mitchell, Richard McClune, Kris Matchett and skip Harry Cosgrove, matched their rink 1 counter parts in building up a 6-2 lead. Comber kept this rink tight until the half trailing 9-6, the Lurgan rink pulled away winning 4 of the next five ends to increase their lead to 8 shots 15-7. The Lurgan rink finished strong winning their rink 22-12 gaining vital extra shots.
On rink 3 for Lurgan Gareth Bunting, David Millar, Stephen Poots and Alan Roberts, started strong against the Comber rink building up an impressive 12-1 lead in the opening 5 ends, however the Comber rink came back at the Lurgan four and reduced Lurgan’s lead to 4 as Lurgan led 13-9 at the half. Lurgan put themselves in a strong position at three quarter distance leading 19-11, again Comber fought back and there was only a single shot in the rink going into the final end. With Comber holding shot and only the Comber skip to bowl it looked like the comeback was complete, however the Comber skipped forced a shot trying to gain extra shots would take his own bowl out to leave Lurgan holding 2 shots to take the win 24-21.
On Rink 4, Melvyn Hamilton, Reece Millar, Bobby Ruddell and skip Mansell Montgomery fell behind early failing to score in the opening 5 ends trailing 10-0. Lurgan clawed back some of this deficit as they trailed 13-5 at the half way stage, Lurgan would further reduce Combers lead to 15-9 at three quarter distance. With one eye across the green knowing the game was close the Lurgan rink would gain 4 shots in the final two ends to finish down 20-14 however ensured Lurgan would progress.
