LURGAN Seconds continued their unbeaten start to the season with a gutsy derby performance away to Portadown Seconds.

Having notched up a 12-0 scoreline against Greenisland and squandered as many chances against Lisnagarvey last week, it was vital to get the wheels back on the wagon.

However the regular team was five players short. Four brave souls doubled up and came on after their Thirds game.

Their fortitude and the team’s pace and skill proved too much for their opponents and Lurgan came away with a 4-0 win.

It was a new addition to the squad that opened Lurgan’s scoring. Fast and strong Julie Morrow showed the “whatever it takes” attitude as she dived head first to reach a sweep shot on the 10th minute.

On the brink of half-time it was excellent link work from Gemma McBride and Katie Magowan that added number two.

They beat three defenders and the keeper with superbly timed one-two passing and eased Lurgan’s nerves further.

It was the dashing duo again for Lurgan’s third as third support play of each other and their pace and reactions made it 3-0 ten into the second period.

Sarah Denver, rated very highly by firsts coach, Gary Blyth, was the architect of goal number four.

Playing at centre defence, she gathered a loose pass and with a quick scan spotted Gemma McBride unmarked on the opposition 25m line.

With the skill of a seasoned pro she smashed a 40m pass through the middle of the park straight to Gemma’s stick.

Not to waste it Gemma, as cool as the other side of the pillow, swept into the circle and deftly pushed it right of the advancing keeper for a final fourth.

This week sees another derby game at home to Armagh Seconds.
