Lions competition a success for charity

ON Saturday Lurgan golfers were playing in an annual charity competition in support of the Lurgan Lions. An enterprising 245 golfers gave their support to this annual event.

In this 18 holes stableford event 27 managed returns better than par. This represented about 11 per cent of the field.

Conditions were overcast and there were bouts of soft rain to add to the difficulty. As usual there were some excellent scores emanating and they captured the various prizes.

The main prize in the competition went to Paul McConaghy. This 11 handicap golfer succeeded with a wonderful total of 44 points. He was round the 18 holes in a very competitive gross 73.

Such was his consistency that he had six pars on each of the nines. Birdies were pencilled in on holes six and 10. A double bogey at the seventh and bogeys on holes two, 16 and 17 were his only wayward efforts. On a difficult day this was an awesome score.

Runner-up was Patrick Currie with a well manufactured tally of 42 points. This 12 handicapper was in the thick of things with pars at holes one, three, four, six and seven. A birdie at the ninth was a further endorsement of his good play. Another birdie came his way at the fourteenth. A run of pars at holes 10, 11, 13 and 17 consolidated his winning score.

The third net prize went to Gopal Santokhi. This 23 handicap golfer triumphed with a score of 41 points. Par figures at holes two, five, eight, 15 and 17 were the highlights of his under par round.

He had five double bogeys on his card and with a little care he could have been higher in the ratings.

The weekly gross award went to Paul Magee. This five handicapper took the honours with 35 gross points or a gross 71.

Birdies on holes three, four and 10 proved the key. His only concessions to par came at holes six, seven, 15 and 17. With pars on the rest of the holes he duly collected the category prize.

In the Low section the weekly winner was Paul Mulgrew. This 12 handicapper emerged victorious with a tally of 39 points.

Paul had only pars or bogeys on his winning card. On the outer nine he obtained useful pars at holes one, four, seven and eight.

Meanwhile on the other nine he started well with a trio of pars between 11 and 13. Back to back pars on the closing two holes sealed his section win.

In the Middle section Artie McGlone posted the winning score of 41 points. This 13 handicapper had a sensational start with five opening pars.

He added another on the seventh. A fine birdie on the tenth set the tone for the inward nine. A run of pars at holes 11, 12 and 18 confirmed his winning status.

Finally in the High section Mervyn Elwood took the plaudits with a hard working total of 38 points. Off his 20 handicap Mervyn was best served on the day by a birdie at the tenth and pars at holes one, three and eight.

In spite of five double bogeys he held on to achieve sectional honours.

The other golfers with the under par returns were John McComb on 40 points, Martin Corey and Des Gregg on 39 points, Timmy and Peter Cummins, Diarmuid Mitchell, Joe Dowey, Gregory Crawford, Marcel Shanks, John Healy, Pedro McCusker and Jim McCann Snr on 28 points.

Finally on 37 points was Kevin Leathem, Kieran Magee, Andrew Gates, Billy Hughes, Graham Douglas, Thomas Maguire, Paul O’Shea, Hugh O’Reilly and John Menary.
