ON Wednesday 28th November the wider membership of Lurgan golfers were involved in the Wednesday Sweep competition.
It was a fourteen holes competition and the holes not being played were four, seven, thirteen and sixteen.
Martin King had the winning card. The 24 handicapper won with a mighty effort of 37 points for the regulation fourteen holes. A double bogey at the second was his only blip on this winning card. Par figures at holes one, three and five provided the early bliss. On the inward seven he boosted his chances with slick pars at holes twelve, fourteen, seventeen and eighteen. This cracking good score eased him three points clear of the pursuing field.
Regular Wednesday golfer Bryan Turkington was second with a wholesome tally of 34 points. The 12 handicapper had a few hiccups on the outward seven but pars at holes one, two, six and nine steadied the ship. He had a delightful six pars on the homeward sector. This was coupled with a birdie at the closing hole.
Third net went to long time member Jim Stevenson with his tidy return of 33 points. Playing off a thirteen handicap Jim had some early fireworks with birdies on holes one and five and a par at the second. On the concluding seven he managed six pars to accompany a bogey on the fourteenth. This was good enough to secure him the last net prize.
Paul McCabrey snatched the gross award with 29 gross points. This three handicapper was through the front seven with six pars and a birdie on the third. He was level par through the back seven. He had birdies on holes fourteen and eighteen and they squared up bogeys on holes twelve and seventeen. Pars were scored on the other three holes.
