Over the past few weeks there have been peaks and troughs in the success of the Lurgan teams.
The Irish Mixed Foursomes team topped the qualifying group at The Spa with an excellent team return of 299.5. They were joined in the matchplay stages by Spa, Banbridge and Ardglass. Lurgan played Ardglass in their opening match but unfortunately they were just eased out by three matches to two. In the recent Senior Cup qualifying at Rossmore, Lurgan were a few strokes shy of the qualifying mark with a team total of 305.
Lurgan’s Rossmore Cup team fell in their opening match to Clones while the Ulster Cup team succumbed to Foyle in a second round match. In the recent MUSL outing at Edenmore Lurgan’s Aidan Thornbury had the shot of the day at the par three fourteenth. His short iron sailed directly to the flag and dropped into the hole after for an excellent ace. This is one of the few aces recorded in play in this senior alliance tournament over the years.
An exceptional 137 participated in the Wednesday Sweep with long time member Sidney Fairfield carding the winning score of 42 points. This sixteen handicapper had a mixed bag of scores over the opening nine. He ran up double bogeys on holes four and six but birdies at holes three and eight and a par on the fifth tidied up his overall scoring. A birdie, par, par on the opening three holes of the back nine put him in a strong position. His last par of the round came on the seventeenth. However a string of net pars ensured him the principal prize in the weekly competition. Three handicapper Steven Kelly was second with his round of 38 points. Another three handicap golfer Robert Emerson was third with his tally of 37 points. Wilson Collins nabbed fourth place with his score of 37 points. The final net prize on offer went to Francie Tallon. On the day there were two aces. Robert Emerson did it on the seventeenth while Rory Brady did likewise on the twelfth.
