Unbeaten run goes on for second team

Newry 34(5) Lurgan 34(5)

CURRENT Veterans league leaders, the Lurgan number two team, came home still satisfied after sharing a scoreline of 34 shots with their hosts Newry Veterans team and also the ten league points to keep their unbeaten run intact.

The action on rink one began with Lurgan skip Bobby Jones, Sam Neill, Gordon Bell and Ronnie McCullough losing their opening 4-1 lead as the Newry rink, under skip J Kimbley, replied with single and double shots to gain a 6-4 lead.

The Lurgan skip Jones motivated his front three colleagues in his usual verbal manner to score a total of fourteen shots from a great unbeaten run of seven ends, gaining a satisfying 18-6 lead with four ends remaining.

The Newry rink managed to score only four shots to leave the Lurgan side still victorious with a 20-10 win.

On rink two, Lurgan skip Alan Briggs, Peter McGrail, Derek Henderson and Gerry Stewart lost several high scores in the first seven ends to trail by 13-5. The Lurgan rink found it difficult to master the sluggish Newry green so they finally conceded single and double winning shots to the Newry rink, led by skip M. McGuigan.

With only four ends remaining, Newry led 20-9 leaving the scorelines across both rinks in favour of both teams to win outright. However, the Lurgan rink snatched a vital five shot to cut the Newry winning scoreline to 24-14 which resulted in both teams sharing the ten league points with the overall scoreline finishing all square at 34 shots each.
