Nostalgia: Barbara scoops swim medals

Lurgan swimmer Barbara Evans was among the medals at the Ulster Championships in 1971.

She finished with a total of six medals, retained her women’s 200m butterfly title and added the women’s 400m individually medley to her collection.

Her other successes came in the 100m butterfly and the 200m freestyle, finishing second in each of these events and gaining two third in the 220m and 400m freestyle. Club team mate Andre Ray was in equally devastating form, winning both the 100m and 200m backstroke titles.

Other local swimmers in the medals were Irene and Cherry Seyton, Cecil Russell and Turlough O’Hagan. Barbara is pictured here with the trophy for winning the 400m individual medley.
